In recent years, the Jewish community at Temple University has faced significant challenges stemming from incidents of antisemitism, including hateful graffiti, derogatory remarks, and an environment that at times felt hostile. These acts of intolerance culminated in the repeated vandalization of the AEPi chapter house. These events did not go unanswered. AEPi’s petition campaign garnered attention from students, alumni, and advocates nationwide, amplifying calls for a stronger response to antisemitism at Temple and beyond. University administrators received 12,122 petition emails within the first 24 hours of the campaign, resulting in Temple committing to take tangible action in combating antisemitism.
The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights launched a Title VI investigation into complaints of discrimination against Jewish students. While the investigation concluded with no findings of wrongdoing by the university, it brought much-needed scrutiny to how institutions respond to harassment and foster inclusive environments. As part of an agreement with the Department of Education, Temple University committed to implementing several proactive measures, including internal reviews of antisemitic incidents, mandatory annual reports to federal officials, and enhanced training for staff to address discrimination effectively. These steps mark progress toward creating a campus culture where hate has no place.
Throughout this process, AEPi stood as a steadfast advocate for Jewish students, using its platform to ensure that the voices of those affected by antisemitism were heard. The petition campaign, launched after their house was targeted, was instrumental in drawing attention to these broader issues. The campaign also served as a rallying point for the Jewish community and its allies, showcasing the power of collective action in driving institutional accountability. While AEPi’s efforts were part of a larger coalition addressing campus hate, our leadership reflected the fraternity’s long-standing commitment to combating antisemitism and fostering dialogue.
As Temple begins to implement the Department of Education’s recommendations, AEPi looks forward to continuing its work as a partner in the fight against antisemitism. AEPi’s dedication to advocacy extends beyond this single incident, emphasizing the importance of vigilance, education, and unity in addressing hate on college campuses. By collaborating with university leadership and other organizations, we remain committed to creating a safer and more inclusive environment—not just for Jewish students, but for all members of the campus community.
